8 Denture Hygiene Tips

Posted on: April 29, 2015 by Michael Battell

Oral Health and Dentures Oral hygiene impacts on your overall health regardless of whether you have all, some or no teeth remaining.

Poor oral hygiene, cavities and gum disease may be a contributing cause of tooth loss and other serious conditions. Studies have linked poor oral health to heart disease, lung conditions, and diabetes, among other concerns.

If you wear dentures, denture care is vital to preserving your oral health and your overall health. The bacterial film that collects on natural teeth can also be found on dentures, which can potentially have a negative impact on your health.

Common issues resulting from poor hygiene of dentures may include but are not limited to:

Eight Denture Hygiene Tips

1. An overnight denture soaking, with a denture approved soaking cleanser, can kill 99.9 percent of the bacteria that collects on dentures. A 3-5 minute denture soak offered with some denture cleansers, may not achieve the 99.9 percent kill rate of an overnight soak, however, it can be effective in reducing bacterial amount and help with freshening the dentures to reduce bad breath. Follow the manufacturers directions for the specific cleanser you are using to achieve the best results.

2. Brush your dentures following soaking with an approved denture paste, foam, or liquid detergent.

3. Rinse your mouth and your dentures thoroughly following cleansing before placing them in your mouth.

4. Rinse and brush your dentures after meals.

5. Avoid the use of toothpaste or abrasive materials on dentures. Toothpastes have abrasives in them meant for natural teeth and may scratch or wear dentures causing fit and esthetic issues.

6. Use denture approved cleansers, not bleach or boiling water, as these may damage your dentures or be potentially harmful to you.

7. Brush your natural teeth a minimum of twice a day with a soft brush without your dentures in your mouth. Floss or clean between your teeth and scrape or brush your tongue at least once a day.

8. Have your dentures checked regularly by your Denturist.

Regular cleaning of dentures allows them to stay shiny, reduce staining, and reduce bacteria associated with bad breath and other negative health issues. Thorough daily cleaning and a routine follow-up with your Denturist can prolong the life and comfort of dentures and provide a denture wearer with confidence, satisfaction, and a healthier, happier life with dentures.
